What is a dental emergency?

Dental emergencies comprise a broad range of situations. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), dental emergencies are situations that require immediate dental treatment to stop bleeding, prevent infection, or to alleviate dental pain.

What to do in the Case of Dental Emergencies?

While dental injuries and emergencies cannot be avoided entirely, knowing what to do in case of an emergency can mean the difference between saving a tooth and losing one. Here is a list of common dental emergencies and how you can manage them while you’re waiting to see your dentist for an emergency appointment.

Toothache / Dental Pain

Severe, an uncontrolled toothache is one of the most common situations that require immediate dental treatment. Dental pain can arise due to several reasons:

  • Cavities
  • Fractured tooth
  • Broken fillings
  • Dental infection / Abscess
  • Wisdom tooth pain

When having a toothache, rinse your mouth with mouthwash to clean the area. Usually, a toothache can be temporarily managed by taking any Pain medication (Ibuprofen/Tylenol) However, if the pain does not go away even after taking medication, you must call or text us for an immediate appointment

Knocked-out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth)

A tooth can get knocked out during contact sports or any direct trauma to the teeth. If you find yourself in such a situation, carefully hold the knocked-out tooth through its crown while ensuring not to touch its root – and try to insert the tooth back into its position. If that is not possible, then call or text us immediately for an appointment.

If you cannot reinsert the tooth, secure it between your cheeks and gums so that it remains moist. This gives a better chance for the tooth to be saved. You can also store it in milk or any other tooth preservation product that carries the ADA’s seal of approval.

Fractured Tooth

If you have a cracked or fractured tooth, immediately rinse your mouth with mouthwash to remove the broken chips and to clean the area. While you are waiting to see our emergency dentists, apply a cold compress on the affected side to minimize the chance of swelling. In case the broken tooth has sharp edges that are impinging on your cheeks or gums, you can place utility wax over the pointed edges to prevent injury. If the utility wax is not available, you can chew a piece of gum and then put it over the tooth.

Broken Filling, Crown or Bridge

Broken fillings or restorations normally do not constitute an emergency – unless they cause pain. If the fracture is so deep that it has exposed the tooth’s nervous tissues, it can cause severe pain. In such a situation, you can take a pain medication like ibuprofen or tylenol to reduce the pain.

In the meantime, preserve the broken piece of the crown or bridge and call us immediately for an emergency appointment. Our dentists may repair the filling and/or re-cement the crown or bridge back to its position in some cases. If the damage is too extensive, you may need a root canal treatment to minimize the chance of an infection.

Something Stuck Between the Teeth

Sometimes a food particle or a foreign object can get stuck between teeth and cause significant pain and discomfort. To remove the foreign object, gently use dental floss to push it out. Avoid using sharp or pointed objects as it can injure your gums or cheeks. You can also try to swish with a mouth wash or water to force the object out.

If the above techniques are not successful, then you should call or text us immediately so that our emergency dentist Chicago can remove it for you.

Broken Orthodontic Wire

The pointed edges of a broken orthodontic wire can cause injury to the gums and the cheeks. If you have a broken wire, visit us immediately for emergency treatment. In the meantime, try securing the wire’s sharp edge with utility wax or chewing gum.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies?

While we cannot avoid dental emergencies altogether, we can take measures to prevent them as much as possible. The American Dental Association recommends the following to minimize the chances of injuries that can lead to emergencies:

  • If you are involved in contact sports, always wear a mouthguard
  • Never use your teeth as a bottle opener
  • Do not chew on ice, popcorn kernels, or hard candies, as they can fracture your teeth
  • Avoid using your teeth as scissors
