What is a dental emergency?

Dental emergencies comprise a broad range of situations. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), dental emergencies are situations that require immediate dental treatment to stop bleeding, prevent infection, or to alleviate dental pain.

What to do in the Case of Dental Emergencies?

While dental injuries and emergencies cannot be avoided entirely, knowing what to do in case of an emergency can mean the difference between saving a tooth and losing one. Here is a list of common dental emergencies and how you can manage them while you’re waiting to see your dentist for an emergency appointment.

Severe, an uncontrolled toothache is one of the most common situations that require immediate dental treatment. Dental pain can arise due to several reasons:

  • Cavities
  • Fractured tooth
  • Broken fillings
  • Dental infection / Abscess
  • Wisdom tooth pain

When having a toothache, rinse your mouth with mouthwash to clean the area. Usually, a toothache can be temporarily managed by taking any Pain medication (Ibuprofen/Tylenol) However, if the pain does not go away even after taking medication, you must call or text us for an immediate appointment

A tooth can get knocked out during contact sports or any direct trauma to the teeth. If you find yourself in such a situation, carefully hold the knocked-out tooth through its crown while ensuring not to touch its root – and try to insert the tooth back into its position. If that is not possible, then call or text us immediately for an appointment.

If you cannot reinsert the tooth, secure it between your cheeks and gums so that it remains moist. This gives a better chance for the tooth to be saved. You can also store it in milk or any other tooth preservation product that carries the ADA’s seal of approval.

Sometimes a food particle or a foreign object can get stuck between teeth and cause significant pain and discomfort. To remove the foreign object, gently use dental floss to push it out. Avoid using sharp or pointed objects as it can injure your gums or cheeks. You can also try to swish with a mouth wash or water to force the object out.

If the above techniques are not successful, then you should call or text us immediately so that our emergency dentist Chicago can remove it for you.

Broken fillings or restorations normally do not constitute an emergency – unless they cause pain. If the fracture is so deep that it has exposed the tooth’s nervous tissues, it can cause severe pain. In such a situation, you can take a pain medication like ibuprofen or tylenol to reduce the pain.

In the meantime, preserve the broken piece of the crown or bridge and call us immediately for an emergency appointment. Our dentists may repair the filling and/or re-cement the crown or bridge back to its position in some cases. If the damage is too extensive, you may need a root canal treatment to minimize the chance of an infection.

The pointed edges of a broken orthodontic wire can cause injury to the gums and the cheeks. If you have a broken wire, visit us immediately for emergency treatment. In the meantime, try securing the wire’s sharp edge with utility wax or chewing gum.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies?

While we cannot avoid dental emergencies altogether, we can take measures to prevent them as much as possible. The American Dental Association recommends the following to minimize the chances of injuries that can lead to emergencies:

  • If you are involved in contact sports, always wear a mouthguard
  • Never use your teeth as a bottle opener
  • Do not chew on ice, popcorn kernels, or hard candies, as they can fracture your teeth
  • Avoid using your teeth as scissors

I went in yesterday due to cavity pain on one of my molars, I was very scared due to Covid-19 and just going to the dentist in general but knew the pain was only going to get worse if I didn't take care of it soon. I ended up needing a temporary crown and will be back in 2 weeks for my permanent crown and some other work. From start to finish everyone in the office made me feel very relaxed, welcomed, and safe. They seem to be taking every precaution for Covid-19 and included a symptom questionnaire before the visit as well as a temperature check prior to being checked in for the appointment. Doctor wore a mask the whole time as well as directed me on when to take mine off and on for his safety. The office was very clean and without dental insurance they clearly laid out my payment options. I'm glad I chose their office during this time and look forward to getting my dental health on track.

Visited due to my dentist not being open after 2pm(???...) so had an emergency and called them up. They took me in within 30 minutes of calling and started the process for a root canal. Came the next day and got second of 3 phases done. One thing, they are open late. Second, the staff is extremely nice and helpful as well as understanding with insurance concerns. The Dr. and assistant were very courteous to my pain needs and did everything they could to alleviate any pain. This is not some scam in an out place. They do take their time. They give you a shot then let you sit and watch tv for a little while to let it come on. So this is not exactly the fastest dentist you will go to if you have work needs. But they are absolutely thorough. They are gentle and caring. I recommend 100%. We all fear the dentist but this is a place that I don't feel judged, they care for my pain, and have a definite plan to get me on the right path.

I was SO incredibly nervous about having a root canal done because I always really struggle to stay numb during dental procedures. I am such a baby that I am more scared of tooth procedures than I am of actual surgery... I talked to the docs at Wicker Park Dental and they worked with me to make sure I was comfortable the entire time, and they really made sure I was at ease. I had less pain with this root canal than I've had in the past with even small cavities, and I'm so thankful that they listened to my concerns and helped get me taken care of! Everyone inside was incredibly nice, they checked on me constantly and adjusted any time I needed anything, and the office is clean and beautiful. Highly, highly recommend!

i found this practice online in a frenzy to get rid of 2 unbearable wisdom teeth at 2am. I was drawn to them by the reviews of how hospitable, friendly and professional everyone is. I can say from the bottom of my heart that the reviews are an entirely accurate prelude to an experience that far surpassed my expectations. First off. I got an appointment scheduled for 8 AM that same morning, which in itself is a blessing. The doctor is very communicative and lets you know every step of what needs to be done and what he is doing without needing to be asked, as well as the staff whom are unbelievably courteous and supportive.

The best experience I’ve ever had at the dentists and I had a root canal!! Everyone who works here is amazing, empathetic, and kind. Every question I had was answered with patience and knowledge until I understood what was happening. Someone even came in to help me understand how my dental insurance worked and what percentage was covered, so I knew exactly how much I would be paying out of pocket. I ended up needing my first ever root canal. I don’t do well with needles, and Mari held my hand and helped me through it. I cannot get over how absolutely wonderful she was. I’m telling you, everyone that works here rocks. It is rare to have a great experience at the dentists, but I did. 11/10 recommend Wicker Park Dental Group.

I can’t say enough about my visits to Wicker Park Dental. I was able to get an emergency Sunday visit which brought me some much needed relief. They had me back the following morning to finish out my dental procedures and I was floored by how kind, courteous, and professional the staff was. They kept me informed about the work being done and what my insurance was covering and my out of pocket costs so there would be no sticker shock at the end. I will definitely be returning for all my future dental needs and I highly recommend them.

I first learned of Wicker Park Dental after being referred by another customer. The ease of scheduling an appointment, especially during the pandemic, was also met with warm kindness from the staff. After not visiting a dentist for several years, I was quite nervous, yet the staff were calm and patient-offering reassurance and thorough explanations. Ultimately, I received a root canal from Dr. Krishna who has a welcomed conservative approach. And whilst I was extremely nervous, Dr Krishna was effective, reassuring during the process. It’s also worth adding the facility was very clean, and modern. I was also seen within minutes of arrival. Not only do I recommend this dentist office, should a need once again arise, Wicker Park Dental has absolutely won me over.

One of my most recent experiences at a dentist made me feel more like a number than a patient and was just not a great experience. Following a recommendation, I decided to try Wicker Park Dental Group for my follow up and was not disappointed. I received great service from the moment I walked in and couldn’t be happier with my visit. They were great with explaining their process before getting started as well as going over any personal concerns I had. I will definitely be making Wicker Park Dental Group my regular dentist office.

Had to have an emergency root canal after a week of serious pain in my teeth and jaw. They made me feel so comfortable, constantly checking in asking how I was feeling, and you can even watch Netflix during your procedure! Definitely going back to get my wisdom teeth extracted with them, and probably going to keep coming for regular cleanings after. I absolutely felt like they knew what they were doing and I could trust them. They have state of the art equipment I had never seen in other dentist offices before. They also explained the billing very clearly and upfront, before the procedure. I also felt much safer (in terms of COVID) than at my last dentist office, because each exam room is private, whereas my last dentist office everything was open and you were breathing the same air as all the other patients. Thank you to all the doctors and entire rest of the staff!

I have gone here for a few cleanings but today needed to have a crown put in. I was really nervous about the procedure but every single person, from whoever answered the phone when I called, to the receptionist today, to the dentist and the dental assistant, made me feel better. Everyone answered all my questions. The dentist was so kind and checked to make sure I understood what was going to happen, why they recommended the procedure, and paused throughout to make sure I was okay and made adjustments. Obviously no one wants to get dental work done, but I felt really happy I was here for mine! Also felt very COVID-safe/professional.

Everyone was extremely friendly and respectful (especially during COVID)! I haven’t been to the dentist in a while but there was no shame or guilt-tripping. The Hygienist asked me frequently if I was comfortable, if the pressure was okay, if I was feeling pain, etc. Very considerate and I felt like my comfort was their top priority. Only spoke to the dentist briefly at the end of my cleaning but he was very friendly. Prices were broken down line by line and were extremely easy to understand. I had the dentist fix some old fillings and put in crowns and it was a breeze -- seriously the easiest dental work I have ever had done. Highly recommend!

My first visit to Wicker Park Dental Group was for a standard check-up and cleaning, and it was one of the best dental experiences I’ve had! The entire staff was warm, welcoming, and very professional! From the front-desk receptionist, to the technicians, to the dental hygienist and Dr. Raj the dentist, they were all really fantastic! I had a very quick and smooth checkup, and a thorough cleaning. Overall I was very happy with the experience, and I definitely plan to continue being a patient there for as long as I can!

As a person who hates needles and had bad teeth let me tell you how much I hate the dentist office. Some of my experiences have been so painful I wait until I absolutely have no choice before returning. All of that changed with my experience here! The staff top to bottom front house to back room 5 Star amazing. The doctor so kind so patient explained everything in detail a ton of options. And last but not least ... but most important to me little to no pain. Thank the heavens for “ these great people” I’m a customer for life and I look forward to better oral health. Sincerely, ( with a tear of joy ) Orlando

It’s not everyday you run into a business so well put together that you feel safe in a pandemic, you feel well cared for even after the visit and the place has lots of protocols for masks and distancing. Further distinguishing themselves from even great practices is how they recover from an issue, as I had one during a procedure. They holistically took charge and listened as well. I was treated like their most important client and I would bet you would feel this well cared for too. Expert tooth extraction and also crown. All the newest tech to make it the most comfy and precise. Add to that their opening hours are early and they always get right back to me when I have a question. Thanks to all. Recommend to everyone. My Wife and kids will be making this practice our new home for dental.

The best treatment I've ever had so far. Everyone from the doctors to the staff are very friendly and professional. I had a deep cleaning done and some fillings and i was very pleased on how well it turned out. if you want a place where they take the upmost care for their patients with great professionalism this is the place for you. The doctors make sure you receive a treatment plan with the costs and possible extra cost if anything were to go wrong but they never do any type of work without letting you know how much its gonna cost you. They treat you very well here. Dr. Gopisetty was the one that examined me. Overall, best experience I've had in a dental place. Highly recommend coming here.
